Boat Travel During a Pandemic

As the pandemic continues you might find yourself deciding to go ahead with that boat trip you’ve been planning. Following these safety guidelines and doing some homework before you leave can make it a pleasant experience. Here are some things to consider before you push away from the dock.

Different countries and states travel restrictions may vary as it relates to the COVID-19, so first take a moment to do some search, or call the marina or hotel where you plan to stay. Once you know you are clear to visit you’ll want to also keep the following things in mind. Take more provisions than usual as you may find that restaurants and marine stores are closed or don’t have all the items you might need – for example marine toilet paper! Keep in mind that the marina may not offer the same docking services or have ample staff to assist you upon arrival. Call ahead and find out what precautions they are taking and expect you to follow. Take gloves for fueling and touching things like access gates at the marina. While on the dock or in the ship store wear a mask and follow social distancing practices. If you go to an area that is crowded, plan to come back later when things have settled down. Sanitize your hands before you get back on your boat. Wipe down any surfaces that a visitor or a person servicing the boat may have touched.

You may want to consider taking a thermometer and keep track of your temperature. The last thing you want to do is become sick while on the water. Most importantly, if you are not feeling well or there is a possibility you could have been exposed to the virus prior to leaving delay your trip until you are sure you are healthy enough to travel. Wear face masks in public, practice social distancing whenever possible, and washing hand frequently are still the best ways to do our part during this time. We can still enjoy travel by boat if we plan accordingly and follow these safety measures.
