Chuck Truby makes the most of his Express 330,
running 60 miles to the Gulf Stream to fish.

Heck of a Boat
Dear Anchorline:
I keep my new Express 330 on Oak Island, NC, and it's a good 60 miles offshore to the Gulf Stream. The boat is remarkable. I have been out in six- to eight-foot seas and she just handles great. We catch fish every trip to the Stream! One day last November my buddies Henry Hare and Jamie Hughes and I caught several wahoo in the 40- to 50-lb. range. Here's a picture of me at the helm of this great boat. The folks at Crocker's Marine are great, and they perform quality, timely service.

Lake Michigan Express
Dear Anchorline:
I am one of the fortunate that are able to cruise Lake Michigan in an Express 265. Last summer I took her right up the gut of the lake from Kenosha, WI, to Frankfort, MI, in less than seven hours. You couldn't drive there as quickly, or have as much fun! The return trip to my home port in Pleasant Prairie, WI, was a bit more adventurous. The three- to four-foot swells forecast for the day turned into six to eight feet in the middle of the lake, with a two-foot side chop. Thank God I was in my Grady! We changed course, took a straight shot for Sheboygan, and made it across in less than four hours. The boat came out unscathed and my Yamahas just purred. I can't wait until next summer.

Bluefin!
Dear Anchorline:
We had a very exciting day at sea on our Sailfish 282, Double Trouble, in December. We fought a giant bluefin for one-and-a-half hours about 18 miles off Cape Lookout, NC, in fairly heavy seas (four- to six-foot, with an occasional eight). The fork length measure was 73" and the girth was 48", putting it at around 400 lb. The boat couldn't have handled any better.

Baby Grady to the Rescue
Dear Anchorline:
Seventeen family members from New Jersey to Jacksonville to Tampa enjoyed a reunion in the Keys last summer, where we rented a house with a pool and dock in Marathon. We all looked forward to a week of boating, fishing and snorkeling. The week did turn out to be a great time for all, but there was one point where we had our doubts. One of the two boats in our party (not a Grady!) was in trouble, with a load of teenagers who'd been on a snorkeling adventure on Sombrero Reef. The engine of their 23-foot cabin cruiser wouldn't turn over. It was up to the "Baby Grady," my husband David's affectionate term for our Spirit 175 center console, Brenda Jean, to save the day.
The clouds were beginning to turn ominous as we left the dock on our rescue mission. It was a five-mile ride over four-foot swells to reach the stranded boat. We began the two-hour process of towing them to safety, keeping a watchful eye on the approaching storm. The efforts to skirt the squall were successful, and both boats were spared the discomfort of traveling through rough rain and wind. At dinner that night, a toast was offered by all to the little Grady-White that saved the day.

Seafarer Family
Dear Anchorline:
Here's a picture (below) of my son, Charlie, and our dog, Jesse, with our 1990 Seafarer in Ocean City, MD. We routinely trailer this boat between the Chesapeake Bay, where we striper fish, and Ocean City to go out for tuna, dolphin, bluefish and inshore flounder. The boat has a single 225 Yamaha and holds 150 gallons of fuel. No problem running this boat out 40 to 50 miles offshore.

This big blue shark is very big indeed: close to 11 feet with an estimated weight of 250 lb., tagged and released by Steve Dumont from Stratham, NH, and crew in September off Platt's Bank in the Gulf of Maine, 56 nautical miles offshore. "I am on my third Grady, a Marlin 300 purchased last year from Baert Marine in Danvers, MA...this boat is fantastic! My first was a 1988 Sailfish 25, the
second a 1996 Sailfish 27. My buddy Dave Wimberly bought my 27 last year after having a 24—yes, we are Grady faithful!"

In 2001, Michael and Dawn White, customers of Crews "N" II Outboard in Jacksonville, FL, were expecting their first child, a son. After painting the baby's room, Michael looked out the window, saw his boat, and asked Dawn, "What do you think of the name Grady?" As time passed the name seemed to stick and when the baby was born the birth certificate was issued for Grady White. Here he is today!
